How do I train my dog to behave?

If your dog is driving you crazy, you need to read this page. Training a dog is not as easy as buying it. Dogs only know their own "dog language". We have to teach them our language, and make them listen and understand what we want. Dogs are generally smart, so whatever stuff we teach them, good or bad, leave lasting impressions in their minds.

So how do you exactly train your dog to listen to you? This section will touch on the basics only. Specific commands and instructions will be left to the professionals.

  • The most important thing when training your dog, is to build a strong relationship with your dog. A relationship that is very much like that of a family member. There is love, mutual respect and common understanding. To let your dog understand you, you must find understand it. And you are the best trainer for your dog, no one else.
  • Training sessions should be kept short. 15-20 minutes per training session is cool. There may be repeated training sessions in a day, for several days until your dog has fully learnt the desired behaviour. If it has not done so by then, you should change your approach entirely.
  • Make sure you reward your dog after it has learnt to behave itself. You are reinforcing its good behaviour with rewards. But do go easy on those rewards, as you might give your dog the wrong idea that a reward follows every action done.
  • Punishment as a way too? You should scold your dog only when you catch it misbehaving. Then quickly correct it by showing it the appropriate behaviour, followed by rewarding it. Never hit or kick your dog as it might result in a fearful or aggressive dog.

How to choose the correct dog breeds

You have finally decided to get a dog for your family. You are excited and ready for a new family member. You did your homework. You asked around. But there are over 150 dog breeds, which should you choose? And how will external factors affect your decision? Here are some questions that you must ask yourself before you buy the dog. Do not make a hasty decision as it will be yours for life.

  1. Does the law in your country allow certain breeds? In Singapore, certain big dogs are not allowed in high-rise flats. There are also dogs that are not allowed in my country. Be sure to check with the authorities first before you decide.
  2. How much time can you spend with your dog? If your job requires a lot of your time, you should only consider the types of dogs that are not too dependent on their owners. You might even want to drop the idea of having a dog.
  3. Do you have children in your house? Some breeds are suitable for families with children. You should buy a dog with good temperament, and should not be too huge in size.
  4. How much space do you have? If you are living in a small place, don't buy a big dog. Dogs need space as much as we humans do.
  5. How much time can you spare to groom your dog? You must be willing to spend time to groom your dog each day. Dogs like the Golden Retrievers shed hair easily. So, it is important that you choose a dog that fits your grooming schedule.

I hope these 5 questions will help you explore the different breeds that you can consider when getting a dog. Happy breeding! Erm, I mean happy shopping!

Identifying dog health problems

Learn how to identify health problems in your dog so that you can quickly rectify them once the need arises. Dogs do get sick like human babies do. But when a baby is sick, it simply cries. The first thing we do? Send to a doctor. Unlike babies, dogs do not show obvious signs of illness. Therefore, we need to keep a lookout for signs and symptoms that might suggest that your dog is unwell.

Here are the things that you should look out for.

  • Vomitting
  • Uncontrollable shaking
  • Weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Lack of energy or signs of lethargy
  • Discharge from the nose
  • Excessive tearing from the eyes; eyes look dull and cloudy
  • Abnormal behaviour, such as unusually quiet, aggressive or simply not its usual self

Learn to identify these problems with the dog's health guide. It's a comprehensive guide that will take you through the whole examination process.

Am I ready to own a dog? The responsibilities behind it all

Here are some considerations that you need to take note when buying a dog (or another pet). It will be part of your family for the next 15 years or so. Once you have decided to buy a dog, you will have to take responsibility of it till its death. This section will help you make an informed decision. First advice, don't buy on impulse!

  1. What is the main reason for getting a dog? If it is for the kids in your house, you have to remember that children cannot possibly take full responsibility of the dog. Once the novelty of a cute puppy wears off, this responsibility is pushed to the adults (and this happens most of the time). It is important that you educate your child on the importance of being a responsible pet owner. The job doesn't end after the dog has got its dinner. It's a lifetime commitment.
  2. Can you afford the time to take care of your dog? If you don't, getting a dog isn't really a good idea. Dogs require as much attention as we humans do. They love companionship. That's why they say dogs are man's best friends. Are we able to reciprocate the kind of friendship they are offering us?
  3. Are you able to take of it financially? There are many dog expenses, such as dog food, toys and clothes. You have to take it for vaccinations as well. On top of it, your dog should also have a regular checkup. And if it ever falls sick, there is also the medical fees to worry. Your dogs should also be sent for regular grooming to maintain its cleanliness and overall well being.
  4. Do you know how to train your dog? Most of us don't. So it brings us to the next question. Are we willing to learn how to train our dogs? Do we have the time? Do we need to engage a professional dog trainer, the services which might otherwise be expensive?

As long are you are committed to do the job well, I don't forsee any difficulties. But you must bear these questions in mind before you get a dog. An impulsive decision might result in undesirable consequences. So are you ready? Take the quiz : are you ready for a dog to find out!
