What is the best way to drive traffic to a site? Laser-targeted traffic that is FREE! Yes, we are talking about driving traffic through search engines. Search engines provide one of the best traffic because these users are most willing to spend at that particular moment. Having said that, Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is also one of the most difficult task to do because it involves a series of steps that you need to take to attract the search engines spiders. We shall leave this topic to the experts. For now, let's take a look at some of the quick traffic-generation techniques that you can use immediately.

Article directories

Submitting articles through article directories is one of my favourite ways to generate quick, free traffic. Many search engines index information from these directories, and show them in the search results. So if your article is indexed by the search engines spiders, be prepared to receive tons of free traffic!

How to write a good article ( the basics)

Think about what you want to write about the niche that you are in. For example, if you are selling a weight loss product, you can have titles like "How to lose 3 pounds in a week", "10 foods for weight loss", "Easy weight loss tips", etc. The idea is to have attention-grabbing titles that will garner interest.
Do a google search on your topic. Read how others are writing. After you have an idea what to write, begin writing. Just keep writing what comes to your mind. Forget about spelling and grammatical errors. You can always perfect your writing once you are done with your article. Note: do not copy and paste someone else's article and claim it as yours. Some article directories are very strict about this and will NOT publish your article.
End your article with a link to your website/blog. If you are able to get the attention of your readers in your article, they will visit your website.

Classified ads/Forums

Classified ads used to be an effective way to drive instant traffic to a website. However, this trend has declined over the years because too many people are using this method, thus flooding the whole system. Your ads will probably be 'drowned' after a few days. Having said that, it is still possible to generate some traffic to your site. It is after all, free.

Forum sites - what you need to know

Some forum sites do not allow any form of advertising due to excessive spamming. So if you provide a link after your post, it will most probably be deleted. However, some forums do allow you to post a link after you have made a certain number of posts e.g. 10. This is to deter any spammers obviously.

Forum owners appreciate contributors who make sincere comments (either good or bad). If you wish to be part of the forum where your views will be heard, take some time to read through what others are posting, before you contribute. People will start noticing you and visit the sites that you recommend.

Safelists

A safelist is a mailing list where members can send emails to each other. It can be used to advertise websites, business opportunities, blogs, etc. These emails cannot be considered as spam because every member has opted in to join the program by confirming their email addresses.

You can earn credits by reading emails sent by other people. You may use these credits to post your own email. It's very much like an exchange program. Social networking sites are great advertising venues because almost everyone has a social networking account. The first social networking site that I can recall is Friendster.com. Friendster sets the path for new social networking sites, which surfaced much later.

Social networking works well because it is through word-of-mouth. Whenever a friend finds something interesting, he/she will usually mention it in his/her profile.
