Introduction

Smoking is a habit, very much like writing with your right hand or sleeping on your side. You create a series of patterns of behaviour, from hating smoke smell, to 'trying it out', to picking it up, to becoming a habitual smoker. You know the adverse health effects of smoking, yet you simply can't overcome the urge to smoke.

Let's hope this page will talk some sense into you!

Smoking Statistics

Here are some quick statistics:

1. Every eight seconds, someone dies from tobacco use. So by the time I finished this lens, probably hundreds would have died worldwide from smoking.

2. Cigarettes cause more than one in five American deaths.

3. Half of long-term smokers will die from tobacco. Every cigarette smoked cuts at least four minutes of life on average - about the time taken to smoke it.

4. 87% of all lung cancer cases involve smoking.

5. Strokes are the third leading cause of death in the United States. Cigarette smoking is a major cause of strokes.

6. Risk of death is 3.5 to 5 times greater for obese smokers than it is for people who have never smoked and are at a normal weight.

Quit Smoking Symptoms And How To Deal With Them

Symptoms start to develop when you start to quit smoking. This is a natural process because your body starts to expel the poisons that you have accumulated. The process is neither pleasant nor enjoyable. This is also why many smokers fail to quit. The process of quitting is horrible! Here are some symptoms that you will encounter and how to deal with them.

1. Nicotine cravings. Nicotine is an addictive drug and those who have been smoking for a while will depend on it. When you start to quit, the body 'craves' for it due to its absence.

Solution:
Take 3 or 4 deep breaths. Breathe in slowly through the nose, hold for 5 seconds, then breathe out slowly through the mouth. The craving should go away after a while.

2. Coughing and/or runny nose. Your lungs start to heal when you stop smoking. They will try to get rid of the tar and mucus by 'coughing'.

Solution:
Drink some warm water to relieve yourself.

3. Diarrhoea and headaches. Whenever I try to quit smoking, I will experience diarrhoea the next day, without failure.

Solution:
Hydrate yourself often for the first few days to prevent dehydration. Seek medical advice if need be.

4. Irritability, depression or anxiety. This is because you feel that 'something' is missing and that there is a need to 'find' it.

Solution:
Take your mind off cigarettes and keep yourself busy with activities, especially sports.

5. Increased appetite. Since smoking blands the taste of food, quitting smoking will increase your appetite greatly and there is a chance of gaining weight. Some people use this excuse to lose weight!

Solution:
Proper nutrition is still needed here. Refrain from eating foods that contain lots of sugars and fats. Drinking water to fill your stomach will also help.

These are the common symptoms most people face when they start to quit smoking, including me! Just don't ever give up. 5 days is all you need to overcome them, at least for me! Learn how you can
quickly quit smoking by changing the way you think!

What's in a cigarette?

Tobacco companies are fighting the disclosure of the ingredients found in cigarettes, claiming it to be a 'trade secret'. But we do know that a cigarette contains over 4,000 chemicals, of which most of them are harmful.

Here is the list of substances that are 'harmless' and that we use possibly everyday.

1. Ascorbic Acid
2. Basil Oil
3. Beeswax
4. Butter Oil
5. Caffeine
6. Chocolate
7. Coconut Oil
8. Corn Oil
9. Honey
10. Lavender Oil
11. Malic Acid (found in apples)
12. Plum Juice ( yummy!!!)
13. Tannic Acid (found in tea)
14. Vinegar
15. Yeast

Sounds unbelievable huh? I never thought I would find such interesting stuff in a cigarette! Some of these products can be found naturally in food, and in fact, we use most of them for our daily consumption.

Here is the scary list. It is good enough to make you dump your whole packet of cigarettes!

1. Ammonia: Found in household cleaners.
2. Arsenic: Used in rat poisons.
3. Benzene: Used in making synthetic rubber and is cancer-causing.
4. Butane: Used as a fuel.
5. Carbon monoxide: It makes it harder for red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body.
6. Cadmium: Found in batteries.
7. Cyanide: Deadly poison.
8. DDT: A banned insecticide.
9. Lead: Poisonous in high doses.
10. Formaldehiyde: Used for preservation of dead animals/humans.
11. Methoprene: Insecticide.
12. Napthalene: Ingredient in mothballs.
13. Polonium: Radioactive and can cause cancer.
14. Tar : Used to build roads.

So, let me sum up what happens when you smoke a cigarette. You are trying to drink your toilet bowl cleaner, treating yourself like a rat/insect, eating car batteries, protecting yourself against moths, and preserving yourself, ALL at the same time!

Most of the chemicals inhaled in cigarette smoke stay in the lungs. The more you inhale, the better it feels, and the more damage you do to your body. They were added to make you tolerate the toxic amounts of cigarette smoke and with the intention to keep you addicted.

Quitting is an option. You do not have to bow to these chemicals anymore.

Why nicotine patches and gums don't work

There are already many ways to quit smoking, from using patches, to gums, to chinese acupuncture, to calling helplines, to counselling, to using hypnosis.

The only thing that links all these methods together is this, they help you psychologically. They make you think that they are helping you to quit. They do work to a certain extent though.

Let's discuss the various ways to quit smoking.

1. Nicotine patches and gums. I think they are only temporary solutions. As long as you depend on nicotine, you will always have the urge to smoke. Besides, gums taste horrible because they give you this 'dry' taste that makes me wanna puke!

2. Chinese acupuncture. Needles are inserted in the areas that will affect energy flow to the mouth, lungs & respiratory system as well as parts of the brain that generate cravings for nicotine. It has been proven to be effective. However this is not a very popular method because some people freak out on the sight of long needles of various sizes. FaintZ!

3. Helplines and counselling are probably the least effective. You only get to talk to 'someone' over the phone and unless you follow closely the advice given, you will most likely fail. You will need a lot of discipline on your part to succeed.

4. Using Neuro-Linguistic Programming(NLP) might help you because this is where the problem lies. Cravings stem from the brain and unless you make changes to your thinking, chances of quitting are slim. It's all about re-programming your mind after you have given it so much false information. You can win this if you want to.
